Mwonzora recalls Gweru Councillors

By Kelvin Kasiwulaya

Just In… The Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T has expelled and recalled three City of Gweru councillors including Deputy mayor Cllr Cleopas Shiri.

The three are Cllr Martin Chivhoko Ward 4, Cllr Cleopas Shiri Ward 5 and Cllr John Manyundwa ward 18.

In a letter addressed to the Acting Town Clerk, Local Government Minister July Moyo said he received a letter from MDC-T notifying him of the expulsion of the three councillors and the immediate declaration of a vacancy in the three wards.

I wish to inform you that, I am in receipt of a letter from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) stating that the following councillors have been expelled from the party: Cllr Martin Chivhoko ward 4, Cllr Cleopas Shiri ward 5 and Cllr John Manyundwa ward 18″

“In terms of section 278 (1) of the constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with section (1) (K) the above-mentioned wards are now vacant” reads the letter.

Following this communication, Gweru Acting Town Clerk, wrote to all three expelled councillors, notifying them of their expulsion and declaring vacancies in their wards.

When contacted for comment Clr Chivhoko laughed it off saying that he was a CCC councillor, not MDC-T.

“The recalls are meant to give a majority of votes in council to the MDC-T mayor and a few councillors as well as appointing a new deputy mayor of their choice. We are are not moved by such ill-advised moves, said Clr Chivhoko. Follow us on Twitter @SunGweru
