Gweru journalists joined colleagues and friends at Central Radio in paying their last respects to the station’s late manager, Mr. Dumisani Sibanda, ahead of his burial in Bulawayo.
Sibanda, who died on October 2, 2026, was remembered by members of the media fraternity as a dedicated broadcaster whose career at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) spanned more than two decades.
Gweru journalists gathered alongside Central Radio colleagues to mourn the veteran broadcaster and share memories of his contribution to the media industry.
Born on November 10, 1981, Sibanda began his career with ZBC in 2002, joining the national broadcaster as a student on industrial attachment.
His passion for broadcasting and commitment to his work saw him rise through the ranks from producer/presenter to executive producer, and eventually to station manager at Central Radio.
He also played an important role in the development of ZBC radio stations, including SFM, Spot FM, and Classic 263, leaving a mark on the country’s broadcasting landscape.
For journalists in Gweru, his death represents the loss of a colleague and senior figure within the local media fraternity.
His experience in radio broadcasting and his interaction with journalists and other media practitioners made him a familiar figure in the city’s media circles.
Sibanda was born into a family of three boys and was the first-born. He attended Emakhandeni Primary School, Regina Mundi for his secondary education, and Inyathi High School for his Advanced Level studies.
He later obtained a diploma in Journalism and Media Studies from Business Environment Services.
He is survived by his wife, Patience and their son, Andile.
As Gweru journalists, RiverValley Group of Properties CEO Dr. Smelly Dube, and Central Radio colleagues gathered to bid him farewell, they extended their condolences to the Sibanda family, friends, and colleagues.
Sibanda will be laid to rest in Bulawayo on Sunday, bringing to a close the final journey of a broadcaster who devoted much of his life to radio.
May his soul rest in peace.
Mourners gathered for a church service at a local funeral parlour in Harare on Saturday, where family members and colleagues paid tribute to his broadcasting career and contribution to ZBC.
ZBC Chief Executive Officer Mr Sugar Chagonda described Mr Sibanda’s death as a loss to the entire ZBC family.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of us, Dumisani, who was a very talented and passionate broadcaster, serving as producer, then executive producer and later became Central Radio Station manager.
