In the Midlands, music, crowds, and a message against drug abuse are coming together through a growing series of free Passa Passa shows that give local artists a stage while promoting an anti-drug campaign directly in communities.

Midlands musician Forward Maposa, known by his stage name Xiddo, believes these shows demonstrate that entertainment can serve a purpose beyond just music and dancing. Xiddo, who has performed at several Passa Passa events, said the Moto Moto Family initiated the movement as part of an ongoing effort to combat drug abuse.

“I’m very glad to be part of this initiative. The Moto Moto Family started this movement, which focuses on preventing drug abuse, and I will continue to support it as one of the prominent artists in the Midlands,” he said.

What distinguishes Passa Passa from traditional concerts is its intentional departure from a ticketed model. The shows are generally held in open spaces and shopping centers, making them accessible to individuals who might not usually attend formal music events.

Xiddo explained, “The unique aspect of Passa Passa is that it is free and takes place in open areas and shopping centers, allowing everyone to attend. This approach is designed to attract large crowds and spread our message, unlike typical shows.”

While crowds enjoy the entertainment, emerging musicians gain invaluable exposure. Xiddo believes this open platform can revitalize the Midlands entertainment scene by allowing up-and-coming artists to perform alongside more established performers.

“This is the best way to rapidly grow our entertainment industry in the Midlands. There are no restrictions; every emerging artist is welcome to showcase their talent, creating opportunities for more shows,” he stated.

Although Xiddo has become a familiar face on the Passa Passa stage, he clarified that he is not involved in selecting performers for the events; Moto Moto handles that responsibility.

For Xiddo, the advantages of being part of this movement extend beyond the stage. He noted that exposure from performances and videos shared on social media has led to more bookings from across the country.

“It has boosted my career significantly. I receive many bookings from all over Zimbabwe because of this exposure. Video clips are circulating widely on social media,” he said.

This growing visibility has also allowed him to connect with a larger audience, and he confirmed that his following has grown since he became involved in the shows.

The organizers are expanding the musical appeal of the events by inviting artists from outside the Midlands. At the latest Passa Passa show, Harare-based performers such as Van Chogga, TK Mangwana, Pogba, and Ane Magic were featured.

Xiddo revealed that audiences can expect more well-known artists from outside the province at future editions, along with exciting giveaways.

“They should look forward to performances from popular Harare artists as we had at the last Passa Passa. We brought in Van Chogga, TK Mangwana, Pogba, and Ane Magic, along with many gifts to be won,” he said.

At its core, however, Xiddo emphasized that the movement aims to address a pressing issue affecting communities. When asked what he hopes Passa Passa will ultimately accomplish, he simply stated, “To reduce and stop drug abuse.”

With music attracting the crowds and the anti-drug message providing a greater purpose, Passa Passa is creating a space where entertainment and social awareness intersect—while giving Midlands artists like Xiddo another opportunity to grow their careers.
