Construction of a 20-megawatt solar power plant at Jin An is progressing steadily, with the project about 60% complete. The initiative aims to strengthen the company’s energy supply, increase ferrochrome production, and create more employment opportunities.
The General Manager, Mr. Munyaradzi Matanyaire, said the plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of September. Major equipment is already en route and will soon be installed, along with electrical transmission equipment that will connect the new plant directly to the company’s furnaces.
This investment is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the company’s high electricity demand. Jin An is one of Zimbabwe’s major ferrochrome producers, operating five furnaces that require about 50 megawatts of electricity to run at full capacity.
The new 20-megawatt solar plant will supplement electricity from the national grid, ensuring a more stable and reliable power supply for production.
Mr. Matanyaire emphasized that reliable electricity is essential for the smooth operation of the furnaces, as power interruptions can disrupt production schedules, increase operating costs, and reduce overall output. The solar project is therefore expected to enhance efficiency while reducing dependence on the national electricity grid.
Ferrochrome produced at the plant is a vital raw material in the manufacture of stainless steel and other steel products.
The company exports a significant portion of its production to international markets, contributing notably to the country’s foreign currency earnings.
Currently, Jin An employs between 650 and 750 workers, depending on production levels.
However, Matanyaire indicated that completing the solar power project will allow for increased production, enabling all five furnaces to operate at full capacity. This expansion is expected to raise the workforce to around 800 employees, creating additional job opportunities for local communities and supporting economic growth.
Once operating at full capacity, the company expects to produce about 6,000 tonnes of ferrochrome each month.
This increased output is projected to generate an annual turnover of between US$32 million and US$36 million, further strengthening Zimbabwe’s mining and export sectors.
The solar power project also highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in supporting the country’s industrial development.
By investing in clean energy, Jin An aims to reduce pressure on the national electricity grid while ensuring that its operations remain sustainable and competitive.
Industry observers note that investments in renewable energy are becoming increasingly essential as mining and manufacturing companies seek reliable and affordable electricity sources. Such projects not only enhance productivity but also bolster the country’s commitment to cleaner energy and increased industrial output.
With construction advancing well and commissioning anticipated before the end of September, the Jin An solar power project is set to become a significant milestone for the company.
Once completed, it is expected to improve energy security, boost ferrochrome production, create more jobs, increase export earnings, and contribute substantially to Zimbabwe’s economic development.
