The Midlands Mining Towns, including Zvishavane, Shurugwi and Mberengwa, have long been known for their rich mineral deposits, have also become hotspots for the spreading of HIV/AIDS among residents aged 15 to 49.

Speaking during a media sensitisation workshop held at Redcliff Hotel, Margaret Mika National Aids Council (NAC) Midlands monitoring and evaluation officer, explained the latest statistics showing Zvishavane as the leading mining town with the highest HIV infections.

“Zvishavane has 0.31 percent of HIV prevalence of ages 15-49, whilst Shurugwi has 0.28 % and Mberengwa is the least with 0.26%. Gokwe North has the least percentage of 0.12%.”

HIV Focal Person for the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) Midlands Province went on to express concerns over new infections among females aged 10-19.

“An estimated 1.3 million Zimbabweans aged 15 to 49 are living with HIV new infections among adolescents are particularly worrying, with 280 females and 38 males newly infected in 2023. This is worrisome because young girls are bringing new infections than boys.”

The Midlands Province remains one of the regions with a high HIV burden, with over 165000 people living with HIV, of whom 148000 are currently on antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe continues to make commendable progress towards the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets whereby 95% of those are persons living with HIV status, knowing their status, 95% of those are diagnosed and are on treatment and lastly 95% on treatment have achieved viral suppression.

The high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Midlands mining towns is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach to address the various factors contributing to it.

By working together, local communities, organizations, and authorities can help reduce the spread of HIV and improve the lives of those affected.
