ZRP Cracks Down on Illegal Toy Guns in a Nationwide Operation

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a nationwide operation targeting the illegal possession and misuse of toy guns and other dangerous items.

The campaign, which began on 27 August and will run until 9 September, aims to curb rising crimes involving imitation firearms.

In Kwekwe, police have already arrested 12 individuals found in possession of replica firearms. The fake guns, bought for around US$45 from undisclosed traders, closely resemble real weapons and are believed to have been used to intimidate victims during criminal acts. Authorities are now tracking the source of these weapons.

One major case involved a 9mm toy gun used in five robberies, leading to the conviction and sentencing of the suspect to 15 years imprisonment.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of okapi knives, machetes, pellet guns, shockers, and slingshots.

In Gweru, Assistant Insp Dube confirmed that his team also confiscated several toy weapons during routine patrols and targeted searches.

Commanding Officer in Charge for Kwekwe, Ison Chapeta, assured residents that police will continue intensifying patrols to rid the city of illegal weapons.

“We are fully committed to restoring public confidence and making our communities safer. These imitation guns pose a real threat when used to commit crimes.”

The ZRP urges citizens to report suspicious traders and individuals, as the operation continues to send a strong message against the misuse of imitation weapons.
