ZMC advocates for AI in newsrooms

Blessing Nduku

In a bold move to modernize journalism, the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has called on practitioners to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and fully utilize the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to improve newsroom efficiency and promote transparency.

Recently, a training workshop was hosted by ZMC and equipped 22 Gweru journalists with practical tools for accessing public information and enhancing content creation.

ZMC vice chairperson Jasper Maposa described FOIA as a vital tool for promoting transparency and accountability.

FOIA replaced the outdated Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) and aligns with Section 62 of the Constitution, which guarantees citizens access to information.

FOIA empowers citizens, especially journalists, to participate in governance and hold public institutions accountable.

It also promotes ethical and responsible journalism.

He encouraged media professionals to understand and apply the Act, saying it has the potential to transform raw information into impactful stories that serve the public interest.

ZMC Director for Media Development and Governance, Nyaradzo Makombe-Hazangwi, echoed the sentiments and highlighted how AI can complement journalistic work.

“This is a progressive Act that gives journalists the power to access public information. We also introduced AI tools to show how they can ease workloads and enhance content creation.”

“Makombe-Hazangwi reassured journalists that AI is not a replacement for human skills but a tool to enhance productivity and storytelling. Journalists have been using forms of AI for years. What matters is how responsibly these tools are used.”

The training session provided practical tools and insights for accessing information, conducting research, and generating content more efficiently.

Speaking after the training, Johanna Mathe of 98.4FM Midlands noted that the training improved her understanding of AI in journalism.

“We learnt how to improve our reporting and ensure accuracy, even when using AI-generated content.”

The Zimbabwe Media Commission’s (ZMC) push for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and full utilisation of the Freedom of Information Act marks a pivotal shift in modern journalism.

By equipping media professionals with tools to access information and improve newsroom efficiency, the Commission is not only embracing innovation but also reinforcing the role of journalism in promoting transparency, accountability, and public empowerment.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, such initiatives are critical in ensuring that journalists remain relevant, ethical, and impactful in their storytelling.
