Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) will sponsor ten junior league teams per province to come up with a national team, Stanely Chapeta the Central Region Chairman has said.
Addressing a youth launch development meeting, Chapeta noted that only the under 15 teams will officially get sponsorship from ZIFA to come up with a team that represent Zimbabwe.
Chapeta said that some of the national team players were getting old and ZIFA was planning ahead to avert a crisis.
“Some of our players are getting old and if we don’t have plans for the future we will end up not having a national team.
“The agenda is to come up with the best footballers thus the 10 league teams must constitute the best players for now,” said Central Region Chairperson.
Regional Chairperson Artwel Moyo who was representing the Zimbabwe Football Association Youth Affairs and Development committee said the teams will be for all genders and the program will focus on a small area.
“The under 15 is not for males only but also for females and we will focus on a small area so that transport costs will be manageable since every expense will come from ZIFA,”said Moyo.
ZIFA will use the same criteria as before as coaches will make applications and the referees will be appointed by the sub committees.
The program focuses on youth development and will run for two years then graduate to under 17.
