The President of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), Nqobile Magwizi, has hinted at plans to increase the number of teams in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) from 18 to 20.
This proposal comes as part of a broader vision to establish a National First Division League, which would provide a more structured pathway for aspiring local clubs across the nation.
Currently, the PSL operates with 18 teams, while four regional leagues compete for promotion to the top tier.
Each regional league’s champion earns a coveted spot in the PSL, but Magwizi’s proposal aims to streamline this process and enhance the competitive nature of Zimbabwean football.
At a press conference held at the Harare Town House, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume expressed his support for ZIFA’s ambitious plans, where ZIFA secured 40 hectares of land in High-glen for new offices through a partnership with Harare City Council.
“As ZIFA we are considering increasing the number of teams in the PSL from 18-20 by next year. Beyond that, we are looking at introducing a National First Division League instead of current regional leagues.”
This is not the first time the idea of expanding the PSL has been discussed.
Former President of ZIFA Gift Banda, previously hinted at similar plans during a meeting with regional league representatives
In a letter addressed to the regional leagues, Magwizi outlined the vision for the proposed National First Division League.
“The Executive committee resolved to embark on the National Division League in line with section 10 of the ZIFA Constitution”
“We are therefore inviting your top four clubs to join the inaugural league.” The response from regional league officials has been largely positive, with many expressing enthusiasm for the potential changes.
As discussions continue, the football community eagerly awaits further developments on this ambitious proposal.
With the backing of local authorities and a clear vision from ZIFA, the future of Zimbabwean football looks promising, and the prospect of a National First Division League could be a game-changer for the sport in the country.
