ZETDC to partner local solar owners

In a move that is meant to ameliorate the scourge of incessant power outages and reduce pressure on the national grid, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has introduced a new service where customers with solar systems can now contribute excess electricity generated from their renewable energy source to the power company’s electricity grid.

Those that will supply the grid will be paid, but not in cash, they will get their proportional electrical power units credited to their ZETDC account thereby benefiting them by keeping their bills in the low tariff band.

Dubbed the Net Metering Innovation, the new service allows any existing customer generating renewable energy on their premises to feed excess power back into the ZETDC Network through a grid-tied inverter and a smart meter.

Introducing Net Metering to members of the public through their weekly publication ZESA Dairies, the power company said the project will reduce bills for local solar power suppliers, promote the use of renewable energy and develop a local electricity market.

“The benefits of Net Metering are as follows; Customers can reduce their electricity purchases from distribution networks through the generation of their own electricity. It reduces pressure on the national grid by supplementing the current generation. It promotes sustainable renewable energy sources, small-scale investments, value addition, and electricity market development

“Customers can pass on their surplus generated energy to ZETDC through a grid-tied inverter and smart meter, power is then used to offset electric energy provided by ZETDC to the customer during an applicable billing period” reads the publication

ZETDC also gave a technical explanation of how the system works.

The system starts with solar panels that convert energy from the sun into electricity, an inverter then converts the electricity produced by the solar panels from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC) for use in your home, school, or business. Finally, the installed bi-directional meter measures the energy used and excess energy produced which is passed on to the grid, said ZETDC. #The Sun
