The community bakeries project implemented by the ruling party ZANU PF has been well received in rural areas of Shurugwi as disadvantaged members of the community can now access bread at reasonable prices.

The project which is aimed at ensuring that local people are empowered and can earn a living through profits from the initiative.

Some areas like Nhema, Tongogara and Zhaugwe have since started baking bread and has so far created employment to a number of youths in the rural areas and also promoting the business aspect of the project.

The ruling party gave each project 10 × 50kg bags of flour in a measure to ensure ready availability of the essential product and the youths will use the profit as working capital.
In areas like Reitfontein, the community bakeries project has helped erase the mentality that the practice of illegal gold mining was the only way to generate income.

Member of Parliament for Shurugwi South constituency, Edmund Mkaratigwa has since pledged to the Reitfontein Farm community with capital and input supply assistance as well as establishing a conducive market for bread which they would’ve baked so as to maximise profits.

The project has also seen members of the community benefiting from knowledge and experience as professionals were hired to orient and teach them on how to build the ovens , bake bread and to effectively market their products.

This development has transformed the Shurugwi community evident by increase in number of youths who are leaving the illegal gold panning trade to venture into innovative projects.
“The community bakeries project has contributed much to the development of our area because there is employment creation as some of us are now hired to construct the ovens, while some can bake bread and sell, hence reducing poverty.

“We gladly embrace the project because it has also benefited the youths who’ve been involved in such activities like gold panning, to think in a more enlightened way where they can make a life without breaking the law hence the project has emerged to be a remedy,” said Tembinkosi Funhiro.
The ZANU – PF party has also promised to carry out other projects for the Shurugwi community such as poultry so as to recruit talent in a variety of trades and ensuring that there is development in remote areas.
