Women Of Wonders have embarked on a sanitary pads campaign to alleviate the plight of unprivileged women and girls in various communities. The initiative started at Mambo High School in Gweru last week.
Speaking to this reporter the CEO of WOW Brenda Mapuranga (23) said that there have been major concerns over the soaring costs of pads.
“As an organization, we are there to promote menstrual hygiene as well as to ensure accessibility of hygienic materials for young women as well as to ensure that women’s health is not compromised at all.”
“The main thrust of this initiative is to ensure that all the unprivileged girls access sanitary pads.”
She went on to say that the reason why they visited Mambo High School was to empower the girl child as well as educate them on menstrual hygiene.
“We were honored when the headmaster approved our visit and the main reason we had to visit was to educate and empower young women, especially on menstrual hygiene.”
“I felt that most women out there are not educated enough especially on menstrual hygiene, long ago women were taught about this by ‘aunts’ nowadays and now it’s rare to find aunts who teach young women hence we felt as an organization we should take that role”
WOW not only donated pads to Mambo High female students but they also donated stationery as a symbol of empowering women educationally.
Women of Wonders was founded in 2020 and it started as a social prayer group then later got the idea of making it an empowerment group for women after discovering that most suicidal cases, early marriages, peer pressure, and GBV cases are of women.
It then became an organization that helps women by teaching them to be independent, stand for their rights, helping them discover themselves as well as their purposes in life.
