In a chilling incident that has shaken the Zvishavane community, a 27-year-old woman strangled her one-day-old baby.
Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident happened on 27 October 2024 at about 1000hrs when Talent Sibanda (27) allegedly strangled her baby girl and buried her in her backyard.
The incident occurred at Takaendesa Village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane.
Sibanda revealed that she gave birth to a baby girl on 27 October 2024 whom she strangled to death and buried the body.
Inspector Mahoko confirmed the horrific act and said the crime was uncovered when Sibanda’s uncle Peterson Tauro reported the matter after she confessed to him.
It is reported that Tauro heard rumors that Sibanda was no longer pregnant and decided to investigate.
Upon inquiry, Sibanda revealed the shocking truth leading Tauro to immediately report the incident to the authorities.
The police swiftly responded exhuming the baby’s body and transporting it to Zvishavane District Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Sibanda has since been taken into custody.
This disturbing case highlights the pressing issue of infanticide in Zimbabwe.
