A wave of terror that gripped Central Estates and Moffat Business Centre in Mvuma last October has come to an end with the sentencing of two men involved in a series of harrowing rape and robbery cases.
Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest of the trio and their connection to nine reported cases of robbery and rape.
The arrested suspects are Edward Nhokwara (20) of Inkosi farm in Chivhu, Devine Nyasha Gapu (19) and Emmanuel Mavhundutse (22) of Kubatana Village, Gutu.
The three men were arrested in connection with nine reported cases of robbery and rape that occurred throughout October 2024.
Residents and business owners in the area were subjected to terrifying night-time attacks, where the assailants, armed with axes, demanded cash and valuables.
Female victims were also brutally raped.
Gapu and Mavhundutse were each sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with labour at the Gweru Regional Court on 3 March 2025.
Their accomplice, Edward Nhokwara (20), awaits sentence.
The breakthrough in the case came on 27 February 2025, when Gapu and Mavhundutse boarded a haulage truck in Chivhu en route to Mavise, Mvuma.
Upon disembarking, Gapu snatched the truck driver’s wallet, containing $290, 400rands, and identification documents, before fleeing into a nearby bush.
Police investigations swiftly led to the arrest of Gapu and Mavhundutse in Chivhu.
Their interrogation resulted in the apprehension of Nhokwara. Further investigations connected the trio to the nine rape and robbery incidents.
The total value of stolen property amounted to USD 1 095 with $271 worth of goods recovered.
We want to send a clear message to those engaged in criminal activities that the law will eventually catch up with them,” stated Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.
“We also express our sincere gratitude to the public for their unwavering support in assisting our police work.”
The sentencing of Gapu and Mavhundutse brings a sense of relief to the Mvuma community, which had been living in fear. The police have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
