Via Mambo accident’ survivor speaks out

A Mkoba 20 man, who survived a road accident along Hamutyinei (via Mambo) road that claimed four other passengers as they traveled home, says it is a miracle to be alive.
Jefious Makirimira narrated what transpired with tears in his eyes, shared his experiences following the fatal car crash that occurred in Gweru, along the via mambo route after a Toyota HiAce kombi veered off the road killing four and injuring several others.


The incident occurred at the 3-kilometer peg along Hamutyinei Road in Gweru on July 15th around 1600 hours.
Makirimira said that the impact of the car accident was devastating both emotionally and physically as he recalls the details with chilling clarity.


” I woke up in the hospital, and the reality of my situation began to sink in as I had sustained multiple fractures and a broken arm. It was like time slowed down, I heard the screeching of tires, and then the car veered off and hit a person who was on a bicycle,” he narrated.


He also highlighted that the accident has brought a shift in perspective as he is just grateful for each day a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the unexpected turns it can take.

Makirima said he remembered hearing the shattering of glass, with people screaming out loud and suddenly the car started to roll.
“I was immediately thrown out of the vehicle with a few others then it was total darkness for me.”


The days that followed were a blur of pain, fear, and uncertainty for Makirimira.
“I felt so vulnerable, I was scared I’d never use my arm again, but amidst the vulnerability, a new strength emerged I fought through the pain,” he said.


He also highlighted that the accident has brought a shift in perspective as he is just grateful for each day a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the unexpected turns it can take.


The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal road traffic accident.

“Four people died whilst, 18 others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with 21 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned three times before landing on its right side. The bodies of the victims were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for post-mortem. 17 injured victims were admitted at the same hospital whilst another victim was referred to Bulawayo United Hospitals for treatment,” said the police.
