The Midlands Province has been robbed of the much awaited National Youth and Paralympic Games which were scheduled for the 15th of August following a massive outbreak of typhoid which has hit Gweru .
In a press statement released by the Ministry of Health and Child Care it highlighted that the outbreak started on the 2nd of July 2018 and as for now the outbreak is not yet under control since the outbreak is still fluctuating .
‘’This letter serves to inform your office that the Ministry of Health and Child Care has realised that the City of Gweru has experienced a diarrhoeal disease outbreak since the beginning 2nd of July 2018 to date. This decision is made in order to reduce the risk of exposure to the officials and sports teams and avoid spreading the outbreak to other areas,’’.
The Ministry of Sports ,Arts and Recreation has been served with two options which include the suspension of games till further notice or to change the host Province to reduce the outbreak.
In response to the Ministry of Health and Child Care the Sports and Recreation Commission has postponed the games to December 2018 after consultation with the Minister of State for Midlands ,SRC Board and the Local Organising Committee .
’’The action has been necessitated by the need to avoid putting lives of participating athletes and officials at risk of contracting possible typhoid .While the hosting of the Games has been deferred ,other processes such as resource mobilization to support the games will go on until the Games are held in December 2018,’’.
Meanwhile on a recently held press briefing speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer for Local Organizing Committee Mr James Chivivi , the Provincial Coordinator for Midlands Mr Simon Masaka said progress for National Youth games was already in place as some of the facilities are receiving a major face-lift.
‘’ According to the arrangements that have been made JR Gordard has came on board in the face-lift of Chaplin High athletics ground, 7500 athletes and technical officials who have been registered are expected to be in the province to compete in 23 sporting codes which include darts, cricket, athletics ,netball and many more .All the 10 provinces plus 9 virtual provinces to make them 19 are going to participate in this year ‘s edition,’’said Masaka.
