Smuggled tyres threaten Zim economy and safety

Albert Andiseni-Mashingaidze

In the heart of Gweru, Midlands, a troubling trend is emerging as the influx of smuggled used tyres poses significant challenges to the economy and public safety.

The illegal trade of substandard tyres has raised alarms among government officials, industry leaders, and the general public alike, as it undermines local businesses, particularly those in the tyre manufacturing and retail sectors.

Local manufacturers struggle to compete with the lower prices of smuggled tyres, leading to potential job losses and reduced investment in the industry.

The Zimbabwean economy, already grappling with various challenges, faces further strain as tax revenues from legitimate tyre sales decline.

Smuggled tyres often do not meet safety standards, increasing the risk of accidents on the roads.

The use of substandard tyres can lead to blowouts and other vehicle failures, endangering drivers and passengers.

Authorities are concerned about the long-term implications for public safety if this trend continues unchecked.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Nqobizita Mangaliso Ndlovu, expressed his concerns during a recent press conference.

“During the briefing session, I was told that we having an influx of smuggled tyres”.

“It is just a warning too those who are doing it that will certainly be taking a keen look into smuggling. We believe that it is slowing our economy”.

“We are committed to addressing this issue. So we will be visiting some of these places and we will be taking people to task to show us where they put these products”.

“We are patient to be able to trace back to the manufacturer and it should not happen that this came into our country illegally. It will be confiscated and I am quite sure the person selling it might be also confiscated”.

Rushi Magecha, Managing Director of Tyre, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of regulations, “we are committed to producing high-quality tyres tha t meet safety standards. However, the illegal trade of smuggled tyres undermines our efforts and puts lives at risk.”

The government is ramping up efforts to combat the smuggling of used tyres through increased inspections and penalties for offenders.

Collaboration with law enforcement agencies is crucial to dismantle smuggling networks and protect local industries.

Public awareness campaigns are being launched to educate consumers about the dangers of purchasing smuggled tyres.

As Gweru grapples with the challenges posed by smuggled used tyres, it is clear that a multi-faceted approach is needed to safeguard both the economy and public safety.

The voices of industry leaders and government officials underscore the urgency of addressing this pressing issue before it escalates further.
