The prestigious Simon Vengai Muzenda Golf Tournament lived up to expectations, attracting hundreds of golfers in a vibrant celebration of sport and legacy.
Teeing off on Friday, the tournament brought together golf enthusiasts from across the country, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity.
Participants showcased their skills in an event that not only honoured the late national hero and former Vice President, Dr Muzenda, but also supported a noble cause.
Proceeds from the tournament will go towards the Dr Mzee Trust, an initiative dedicated to assisting vulnerable members of society, in line with the values and legacy of the late liberation stalwart.
“We are very grateful to the government for honouring our father through this tournament that has been turned into a national event. Our father was a passionate man who would help the poor. As such, the tournament helps in paying school fees for a number of children in need. It also helps in meeting the health needs of the vulnerable,” Family Representative, Senator Tsitsi Muzenda said.
The government says the good works by the former Vice President should inspire generations for national development.
“The former Vice President is regarded as the soul of the Nation due to his influence and impact on political and administrative discourse. His political career as a nationalist spread across the entire country and as far as Zambia and Mozambique, where bases for the war of liberation were first established.
He left a legacy of values of Ubuntu, unity, honest loyalty, and wisdom,” Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube said.
The Kwekwe Golf Club is grateful to host the prestigious tournament, which is a World Amateur Golf Ranking-accredited event.
The Simon Vengai Mzenda golf tournament is listed on the Zimbabwe National Golf calendar, and last year, the government declared it a national event in honour of the late Vice President, who died on September 20, 2003.
