The City of Gweru announced a revenue collection blitz from 19 May to 23 May 2025 in a bid to recover USD21 million owed by residents and the business community.
The local authority has been struggling to improve service delivery in the city, due to financial challenges caused by non-paying stakeholders and ratepayers.
The city council has been warning ratepayers to clear their outstanding bills since September 2024.
According to a public notice seen by this reporter, enforcement teams will focus on residential debt collection, commercial debt collection, and business licensing compliance.
However, residents and business owners with outstanding water and rates bills are urged to settle their debts immediately to avoid disruptions.
“We urge all business owners to regularize their operations, obtain necessary licenses, and clear outstanding debts. Failure to comply will result in severe consequences, including water disconnections, summons, property attachment, and lockouts,” the notice reads.
The revenue blitz aims to improve revenue collection and ensure compliance with municipal regulations. “We encourage everyone to settle their debts and ensure compliance to avoid disruptions,” the notice adds.
Meanwhile, as of 31 January 2025, the council was owed $18.88 million, up from $17.33 million in December 2024, hence, the current debt is $ 20,6 million.
Therefore, prompt payment of bills enables the council to deliver proper services and develop the city.
This move is expected to boost revenue collection, improving service delivery and infrastructure development.
