Progress Christian College Founder Laxon Dhegwa dies

The Gweru community is mourning the loss of Mr. Laxon Dhegwa, the founding pillar of Progress Christian College, who passed away last night after a short illness.

Forbes Dhegwa, the brother of the deceased and family spokesperson, confirmed the news and mentioned that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Mr. Dhegwa was widely respected for his unwavering dedication to education and spiritual growth, playing a crucial role in shaping the institution’s vision and mentoring generations of students and staff.

Born in 1963 in Buhera Chitsunge, Luckson Degwa was a teacher by profession.

He taught in Mberengwa, Lower Gweru, and at Matinunura High School before retiring in 2007. His death has left a significant void within the college community and beyond.

He founded Progress Christian College in the mid-2000s with a vision to blend academic excellence with spiritual growth.

Throughout the years, he served in multiple roles—ranging from principal and chaplain to board chair—always leading with integrity, compassion, and a clear sense of purpose. Colleagues remember his commitment to not only building physical infrastructure but also fostering a strong moral foundation for learners.

“He believed that success without character was empty. He challenged us to lead with love and serve with humility,” said one colleague.

Under his guidance, the college expanded from a day school to a boarding school, increasing enrollment and gaining a reputation as one of the most disciplined and value-driven institutions in the Midlands Province.

His legacy of service, education, and faith will live on in the thousands of lives he touched. Funeral arrangements are currently underway. Luckson Degwa is survived by his wife, Mucha Degwa, three children, and four grandchildren.

Mourners are gathering at his house in Lingfield. Mr. Dhegwa’s passing leaves a profound void, but his unwavering commitment to Christian values, education, and community upliftment will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
