Nyasha Mugwidi (28) of Ridgemont has learnt his lesson the hard way after he was sentenced to a 12-month prison sentence for stealing a bicycle while the owner was relieving himself in a toilet.

The incident occurred on the 30th of May this year when the victim, Arnold Chiremba (29), was preparing to leave for work from his residence in Old Ascot, Gweru.

Unsuspectingly Chiremba briefly left his bicycle unattended at the front of his house while he rushed to the toilet.

During this time, Mugwidi seized the opportunity to steal the bicycle and left the scene unnoticed.

Upon discovering the theft, Chiremba immediately reported the incident to the police.

The following day, on May 31, at approximately 1700 hours, Chiremba spotted his bicycle at the Kudzanai bus terminus. After inquiring about its owner, he was informed that Mugwidi had brought it there.

Chiremba then notified the police, which led to Mugwidi’s arrest.

The bicycle, valued at USD 180, was successfully recovered. Mugwidi was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for the theft.

Additionally, a previously suspended two month sentence was activated, resulting in a total effective imprisonment of 12 months.
