MSU celebrates first cohort of medicine graduates

President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the Midlands State University (MSU)’s 25th graduation marking a historic milestone as the university celebrated its first cohort of graduates from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa was among 6479 MSU graduates and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony MSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Victor Muzvidziwa said, “Your Excellency and Chancellor I have the distinct honour to present to you 6479 graduates, 1991 (30%) of whom are postgraduate students. One of these ten will be graduating with a doctorate and five with a Master of Philosophy degree. Two hundred will be graduating with postgraduate diplomas and certificates.”

“Allow me to inform you that we have 18 graduates from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery This is the first cohort to graduate with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at MSU.”

Professor Muzvidziwa highlighted the university’s achievements, including progress in gender representation and innovations at the institution.

“Of the graduates 53 percent are female and 47 percent are male. This includes 19 postgraduates. I am excited to highlight that one of our young innovators has developed modularized units for chlorine production.”

“We are addressing the challenge of food security by developing scientifically validated indigenous/ traditional and conventional knowledge for increasing agricultural production and food security in Zimbabwe in the context of Climate change which has resulted in extreme weather conditions that affect agricultural productivity.”

Diana Mudungwe was among the 18 graduates from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and was awarded 12 awards.

These are The MSU Book Prize and the Elesther Vhunzai Matchba- Hove Prize for the best female student in the MBChB degrees.

The NICOZ Diamond Award for the best-graduating student in the Faculty, The Econet Wireless Award for the best-graduating Student in the Faculty and the Interlink Award for the best-graduating student in the faculty.

The CBZ Award for the best graduating student in the Faculty, The Heartline Zimbabwe Pvt Ltd by Alfred Makara graduating student in the faculty, The Midland Private Hospital Award and Shield for the best-graduating student in the faculty,

The First Mutual Award for the best-graduating student in the faculty, The Gweru Specialist Children’s Hospital Award of Excellence for the best students in the Paediatries,

The Thokozani Mtetwa- Dhliwayo Prize for the best graduating student who obtained a Distinction in Community Medicine and Professor Munodawafa prize for the best graduating student in Community Medicine.

The dawn of a new era of medical education has emerged as MSU proudly presents its inaugural cohort of medicine graduates.

This milestone achievement serves as a testament to the university’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and its unrelenting pursuit of producing world-class medical professionals.
