Mkoba City Football Club has raised concerns over the persistent lack of sponsorship for grassroots teams, saying funding continues to be channelled towards big clubs at the expense of community-based sides that play a vital role in youth development.
The Mkoba 14-based club, which has been operating for 25 years since its establishment in 2000, says the financial challenges threaten its ability to fully support young players who rely on local football structures for growth and guidance.
Club director and owner, Jackson Hofisa, said that despite the club’s strong track record in nurturing talent, securing sponsorship remains a challenge.
He noted that Mkoba City has produced notable players such as Elvis Chipezeze, now with South Africa’s Magesi Football Club, Nicole Mutatiwa of Sheasham, and Charles Mativenga, who plays for Chapungu.
“These success stories speak for themselves, yet we continue to be overlooked,” he said.
The concerns came as the club prepares to host a friendly youth tournament on 11 December 2025, an event meant to empower young people and steer them away from drug and substance abuse.
Running under the theme “Fighting Drug and Substance Abuse Through Sport,” the tournament seeks to provide a positive platform where boys in the Under 13, Under 15, and Under 17 categories can showcase their talent while learning about the dangers of drug use.Teams from Kwekwe are expected to arrive for the event, with their participation being sponsored by Kingdom Blues. Jackson welcomed the support but emphasised that more consistent and broader sponsorship is needed to sustain grassroots football and protect young people from negative influences.
“Sport is one of the strongest tools we have to fight drug abuse in our communities. But without proper funding, our ability to reach and support these young boys becomes limited.
Despite the challenges, preparations for the tournament are well underway, and excitement is growing within Mkoba 14.
The club hopes the event will reinforce the message of living drug-free lives while highlighting the value of community sports initiatives.
As the countdown to the tournament continues, Mkoba City Football Club remains determined to push forward, calling on stakeholders, businesses, and well-wishers to recognise the critical role played by grassroots teams in shaping the future of Zimbabwean football.
