A Gweru based men’s netball team, Midlands Kings, is appealing for sponsorship to enable it to fulfill matches and tournaments.
The netball team is registered under the Zimbabwe Men’s Netball Association (ZIMNA) which then affiliates to Zimbabwe Netball Association (ZINA) is one of the first in the city and has created a lot of interest among many in the community.
Since its formation in April 2019, the team has shown many improvements in all its games. The team cannot afford to pay for transport to match venues and recently they missed the Africa Day tournament held in Chinhoyi because most players are not employed.
In an interview with The Sun, the team manager Sahisa Zhou said together with the treasurer Fortune Ndisengei they have been sponsoring the team using their own resources.
He said a team requires the first 7, 5 substitutes, and 3 reserve players for every tournament. However, because of lack of funds, Midlands Kings usually go to the tournaments with the first 7 and two substitutes only.
“For every tournament, we are expected to pay 30usd as affiliation fee and 120usd per year as registration to ZIMNA. So it has become difficult for me as l have a family to cater for and l am also studying to further my education.” Zhou said.
