Witchcraft beliefs have landed a Gokwe North man behind bars after being convicted for the brutal murder of his father with an axe and a shovel.
Mayor Magusvi (32) of Magusvi village under Chief Nenyunga was sentenced for 30 years in prison by Bulawayo High Court Judge, Justice Thompson Mabhikwa sitting at the Gweru Circuit court.

The court heard that on the 22nd of January 2018 around 1200hrs, Magusvi armed with an axe proceeded to his father’s homestead where he found him having lunch.

A misunderstanding ensued between the two with Magusvi accusing his father of bewitching him. He struck his father Mafios Magugwi Magusvi (78) three times on the head using an axe and several times all over the body with a shovel, accusing him for casting a bad spell on his life.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Mabhikwa said the crime was premeditated as “the attack was vicious and done with actual intent”; hence a length custodial sentence was appropriate in the circumstances as ” life was sacrosanct and should not be taken away for whatever reason “.
