In a case that has shocked the community and reignited discussions on child safety, a 61-year-old man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison with hard labor for the repeated rape of a nine-year-old girl.

The conviction of Benjamin Sibanda was confirmed by Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Midlands, who underscored the severe penalties for such heinous crimes under the Zimbabwe Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

The disturbing incidents began in February 2026 in the Chief Njelele area, where Sibanda and the victim lived in the same village.
The court heard that on February 24, 2026, the young girl was left at home with her five-year-old brother while their parents tended to their fields.

Taking advantage of this vulnerable situation, Sibanda allegedly lured the child to his homestead, where he forced her to endure sexual assault.

The court was informed that Sibanda threatened the victim with violence to ensure her silence about the abuse.
The horrifying pattern of abuse continued, with Sibanda assaulting the girl two additional times whenever her parents were absent.

The young girl’s plight came to light during the third incident when her mother unexpectedly returned home and discovered Sibanda in the act.

This pivotal moment led to the immediate reporting of the crime to local authorities, culminating in Sibanda’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

Community leaders and child protection advocates have expressed outrage at the crimes, emphasizing the urgent need for increased vigilance and protection for children against sexual violence.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by minors and the critical importance of fostering safe environments for children across the nation.

Sibanda’s conviction is a significant step toward justice for the victim and an affirmation of the legal system’s commitment to combating sexual violence. Under Zimbabwe’s stringent laws, offenders convicted of rape face severe penalties, including life imprisonment, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to such crimes.

As the community begins to heal from this tragedy, leaders are calling for increased awareness and education surrounding child protection to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of all children.
