A Kwekwe prison inmate, Knowledge Chirenje has made history by winning Amai Mnangagwa’s national cookout competition at a colourful event held at Mabidi Stadium.

Chirenje’s journey to the top was nothing short of remarkable, with his culinary skills impressing judges and attendees who were present at the Stadium in Beitbridge.

He was given a USD2500 prize and several cooking equipment, which included a four-plated solar-powered stove.

Initially, he started as an inmate cook until his talent was discovered by the Kwekwe Prisons Officer in Charge, who subsequently tried to get him an opportunity to showcase his skills in the cookout competition.

The idea for the inclusion of inmates into cookout competitions came out in 2024 as a way to keep inmates close to their talents and passions, added the Kwekwe prisons officer.

The first Cookout competition he participated in Kwekwe District, he took the second position.

He then polished up his skills and rose to the first position at the Midlands Provincial level.
After winning at the Midlands Provincial Cookout, where he was credited as a professional chef, Chirenje also came first in the Inmate Cookout Competition, which was held in Kwekwe.

His dedication and passion for food remain a testament to greatness as he was crowned national champion at the Beitbridge National cookout.

Chirenje’s culinary journey has been a turning point in the right direction, despite being arrested and convicted for theft of goods. He is currently serving his sentence, which is set to end in September.

The Midlands Province Officer Commanding of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, Commissioner Somemore Gate, expressed his joy and pride for Chirenje’s victory.

We are proud to be the first province to do the inmate cookout competition, and all regards to Chirenje for taking our name to higher levels. We are happy for him, and plans to do a reception party for him are underway.

ZPCS Commissioner Gate supports Chirenje’s dreams to open a restaurant in Bulawayo and sees it as a great initiative that could transform his life for the better.

“We created a bank account for him and all his money was transferred there. The funds will help him pursue his dreams of opening his traditional restaurant in Bulawayo.

The 2026 Finals of the National Cookout Competition will be held in Midlands Province and this will be the first time for Midlands Province to host such a big and prestigious event, all because of the great work from the culinary guru, Chirenje.

Chirenje’s win is a testament to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ (ZPCS) rehabilitation programs, which aim to equip inmates with skills and knowledge to reintegrate into society upon release.
