Kwekwe police arrest suspected serial robberin Mbizo after early-morning raid

Blessing Nduku

Police in Kwekwe have shot and arrested a 24-year-old man accused of being responsible for a series of armed robberies in the Mbizo suburbs.

The arrest occurred during an early-morning interception on January 28, 2025, when the suspect attempted to raid a home in Mbizo 11.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Leonard “Shato” Mugashi, who was recently released from prison and has no fixed address. He was apprehended at approximately 8:00 AM.

According to Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the Midlands provincial police spokesperson, officers intervened as Mugashi allegedly attempted to attack a woman in her home, threatening her with a knife.

In a police statement, it was reported that Mugashi tried to flee the scene and ignored warning shots before he was shot in the kneecap and restrained.

“The arrest occurred during his attempt to attack a woman in her house in Mbizo 11, where he threatened to stab her.
He continued running and was subdued after police fired a warning shot and struck him in the kneecap,” Inspector Mahoko noted.

Police recovered an okapi knife and clothing items believed to have been used in previous robberies in and around Kwekwe.

Investigators have linked Mugashi to three robbery incidents reported in Mbizo 8, Mbizo 2, and Mbizo 22.

In each case, he reportedly acted with two accomplices who are still at large.
Inspector Mahoko stated that the group is suspected of targeting homes in the early morning hours, armed with knives, an iron bar, and an axe.

In two incidents where victims resisted, the robbers allegedly assaulted a couple, identified as Zivanai Machekera, 47, and his wife, Estery Faki, 44, with an iron bar.

From the three targeted homes, the suspects reportedly stole a total of $415 in cash, along with various clothing items.

While details about how the suspects selected their targets were not disclosed, the use of handheld weapons and the reported assaults have heightened public concern within the Mbizo community.

Police have not released further information about the woman involved in the Thursday incident, including whether she sustained any injuries.

Appeal for Information on Two Accomplices

Inspector Mahoko announced that investigators are seeking two suspects known only by the nickname “Mandebele.

He urged residents to report any information that may lead to their arrest and praised community members for their assistance to law enforcement.

He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation as the investigation continues.
“We take this opportunity to thank members of the public for cooperating with our investigative officers.
We hope this support will continue in our pursuit of the two outstanding suspects, who are only known as ‘Mandebele,’ he stated.

Inspector Mahoko warned potential offenders that police will take decisive action if suspects resist arrest.

“We also warn criminals that they risk being shot if they confront or resist lawful arrests.
Police officers will not hesitate to use force when necessary, in accordance with the law.”

Zimbabwean policing guidelines permit the use of proportionate force when a suspect resists arrest or poses an immediate threat to life or serious injury.

Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact their nearest police station, use official police hotlines, or approach trusted community policing forums.

Police advise residents not to confront suspected criminals directly but to observe and document details when it is safe to do so and to inform authorities promptly.
