Kwekwe City Plans for a Smart City

Savious Madanhire

Kwekwe City showcased its plans and ambitions for growth, development and investment opportunities at the recently ended Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) 2025.

Running with the motto “The now city in touch with tomorrow”. The city’s mayor, His Worship Councilor Albert Zinhanga, outlined the city’s vision, focusing on key areas that will shape the future of its citizens.

“With a population of 150,000 residents and 21,000 residential units, Kwekwe City is working to provide adequate housing and infrastructure to meet the needs of its growing population.

The city offers varied stand sizes for high and low-density residential houses, ranging from 200m² to 1000m², with residential stands allocated based on a waiting list and quarter system.

This system prioritizes civil servants, disabled persons, and others, ensuring that those in need are given preference. Measures are also being taken to prevent land speculation and arbitrage, stands are given to people who want to develop.”

“As part of its smart city and urban renewal vision, Kwekwe City is encouraging storey buildings to accommodate more people, offices, and businesses.

This approach will not only enhance the city’s beautification but also contribute to its economic growth.

The Central Business District (CBD) has undergone a facelift with buildings being repainted, and a new shopping center is proposed for the Amaveni high-density suburb.

These developments will bring urban renewal to residential areas, improving the overall outlook of the city,” Mayor Zinhanga added.

Furthermore, Kwekwe City offers vast investment opportunities in mining, agriculture, retail, and wholesale.

The city is open for business and aims to enhance social justice, economic viability, and environmental sustainability.

By showcasing its plans and ambitions at ZITF 2025, Kwekwe City is poised to attract investors and stakeholders who can contribute to its growth and development.

With its focus on smart city initiatives and investment opportunities, Kwekwe City is set to become a hub for economic activity and growth in the province.

Kwekwe City Council is an Urban Local Authority established in terms of Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15) whose mandate is to provide local economic development, infrastructure development, social services such as decent housing and recreation facilities, water and sanitation, primary health provision as well as rescue and emergency operations and public safety.
