OUTGOING Gweru Mayor Alderman Hamutendi Kombayi has received a golden handshake from the city council in the form of a Mazda double cab vehicle, it has been established.
The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. July Moyo on 18 July 2023, wrote to City of Gweru saying if the local authority can afford to dispose the mayoral vehicle to Kombayi, it was free to do so.
“I refer to application from all authorities in relation to request by the outgoing Mayors and Chairpersons to procure mayoral vehicles. This serves to inform you that local authorities that can afford should consider disposing the vehicles to the outgoing Mayors and Chairperson,” said Hon Moyo.
Sources at Town House said the outgoing council resolved last month to award Alderman Kombayi a Mazda BT50, double cab as part of his exit package.
“Yes, a decision to give the vehicle was made last month during a special council meeting and currently the vehicle is being serviced before Kombayi can take it home. Kombayi must be a happy man after he became one of the few Gweru’s ceremonial mayors to receive such a handsome exit package from council as such used to be the preserve of executive mayors,” added the source.
Gweru City Council Communication and Public Relations Officer Vimbai Chingwaramusee said, “As a local authority we received a circular from the Ministry of Local Government Public Works saying that as a local authority if we can afford to give away the vehicle to the outgoing mayor, we can do so.
