Just In… Former Gweru mayor Hamutendi Kombayi has been re-elected as the new mayor for the city after beating Ward 4, Clr Martin Chivhoko.
Clr Kombayi polled 11 votes against Clr Chivhoko who got 4 votes.
The election which was supposed to start at 10am was delayed after the Mwonzora’s MDC-T national executive council members summoned all councillors to a meeting where they gave a directive to elect Kombayi as the new mayor.
“All councilors who were interested in running for mayor were told to withdraw their candidature and give room for Hamutendi. We were threatened to be expelled from council if we voted for any other candidate,” said a councilor who requested not to be named.
One ballot paper was written “Tingagodini isai Hamu wacho” in protest
