Construction of a new healthcare centre in Gwanda, the Joshua Nkomo Clinic, is progressing well, with residents anticipating improved access to medical services.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) 2022 report, Gwanda’s urban population has surged to over 27 000. This increase has placed significant pressure on the Phakama Clinic, which currently serves the majority of residents.
However, hope is renewed with the construction of the Joshua Nkomo Clinic by local philanthropist Mr Jimayi Muduvuri, much to the relief of the community.
“It’s a challenge, especially at night, if one gets sick, you need to hire a taxi because there are no kombies here, “one of the residents noted.
“Sometimes you go to Phakama in the morning, and you would find long queues, so having a clinic here will ease our challenges. We are so happy that we now have a clinic close here because, with the population growth, it had become difficult,” another added.
Ironically opening in the Heroes month, the clinic named after Father Zimbabwe, Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, will offer free medical services to veterans of the liberation struggle and people with disabilities.
“We established this clinic in honour of the peace that was brought about by Father Zimbabwe, Dr Joshua Nkomo. This clinic will provide free medical services to veterans of the struggle and those living with disabilities. We cannot talk of ourselves as business people without mentioning Dr Nkomo, and I have constructed this clinic in honour of him. This is the week we remember their sacrifice, and we thought we should do this,” Mr Muduvuri said.
Joshua Nkomo clinic joins a long list of clinics constructed by the Muduvuri rehabilitation and empowerment foundation, which include Chief Rekai Tangwena (Nyanga North), Robert Mugabe (Murombedzi), Simon Muzenda (Gokwe Centre), Ndabaningi Sithole (Chipinge), Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa (Nembudziya), Mama Mafuyana (Harare), Hebert Chitepo (Mutare), and Josiah Tongogara (Masvingo ), all in line with the Second Republic’s inclusive development agenda.
