Hundreds of Gweru residents were all smiles this week after benefiting from the Mayor’s Cheer Fund, an initiative aimed at providing relief and hope to vulnerable members of the community.

This program, which distributes food hampers and necessities, has offered much-needed support to families struggling under tough economic conditions while reinforcing the city leadership’s commitment to inclusive social welfare.

The beneficiaries, drawn from various wards across the city, included the elderly, individuals living with disabilities, child-headed households, and other vulnerable groups identified through ward councilors and community leaders.

Many expressed gratitude for the assistance, stating that the support arrived at a critical time when essential commodities had become increasingly difficult to afford.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Gweru Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko said that the Cheer Fund was established to ensure that no resident is left behind, especially during times of economic hardship.

He emphasized that the initiative reflects the council’s commitment to compassion, unity, and social responsibility.

“This fund is about restoring dignity and giving hope to our people. As a city, we cannot turn a blind eye to the challenges faced by vulnerable members of our community.

Through the Cheer Fund, we are extending a helping hand and reminding our residents that they are not alone,” Mayor Chivhoko stated.

The mayor also acknowledged the delays in distribution. “We apologize to the recipients of the Mayor’s Cheer Fund groceries. We regret any inconvenience caused, but the City of Gweru does not have a budget for the Mayor’s Cheer Fund; we rely on the support of local businesses and well-wishers. We understand that these groceries were meant to be distributed during Christmas. However, you can supplement the items you have at home to get through this month. We thank you for your understanding.”

Grace Zimbinye from Mkoba 4 expressed her happiness after receiving groceries from the Mayor’s Cheer Fund. As a single mother, she noted, “I’m so happy to have received groceries from the Mayor. It’s hard to raise kids alone, and now I can focus on other needs, like school fees. May the Lord bless him.”

Tererayi Chihoto also expressed appreciation, saying the initiative reflects genuine care and solidarity within the community. “This support means a lot to us. The council does not have a budget for such assistance, so knowing that these items came from well-wishers makes it even more meaningful. We are grateful for whatever we receive.”

As the Mayor’s Cheer Fund continues to reach out to vulnerable residents, city authorities believe the initiative remains a symbol of solidarity and shared responsibility in Gweru.

With plans to expand the program and mobilize more partners, the council hopes the fund will not only provide short-term relief but also inspire a culture of compassion and community support throughout the city.d community support throughout the city.
