Acting finance director Owen Masimba said during a budget review meeting that, the local authority was engaged in talks with Holiday Inn group to build a multi-million dollar hotel in the city.
“A world-class Holiday Inn Hotel is in the pipeline and council is set to agree a mega deal with the group. We want more revenue streams in order to improve our service delivery and that will be a big achievement.
“Currently, we are at the land lease stage and when we finish working on the lease agreement, the project is expected to start,” he said.
Masimba said the construction of a world class hotel will boost the tourism sector in the Midlands province, which only boasts of a few resorts to attract foreigners.
“Gweru is very central in the Midlands capital and many people have shown interest to hold their conferences and other meetings in the city, but when they enquire about accommodation facilities that is when they end up choosing Harare, Bulawayo and other resort towns suchas Victoria Falls.” added Masimba.
The Midlands capital is home to a number of tourist attractions which include the world renowned Antelope Park wildlife sanctuary.
Of note, Gweru boost of two other up-markets hotels like the Village lodge and Suburban which offer world class services.
