Highlanders continue scoring streak

Since the start of the second round of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, Highlanders have found the back of the net in every match.

Basso defeated Bulawayo Chiefs 2-1 and later drew 1-1 with giants Dynamos. They also narrowly overcame MWOS with a 2-1 victory away from home.

At Barbourfields Stadium, the former champions drew 1-1 with the reigning 2024 champions, Simba Bhora. On Saturday, Highlanders secured another 1-1 draw against four-time champions FC Platinum.

This consistent scoring run has propelled the Highlanders into the top half of the standings; however, defensive issues remain a concern for the Bulawayo giants.

Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwaru expressed satisfaction with the team’s goal-scoring but voiced worry over the number of goals conceded.

“It was a game of two halves. In the first half, we really dominated, but we conceded a soft goal,” said Mwaruwaru.

“As I mentioned last week, our main concern is that we are conceding goals. At least we are scoring now, but it’s not enough. My primary concern is the defense.

In the past four or five games, we’ve been conceding goals while also managing to score. In football, if you defend well and score, you can secure three points.”

“I was pleased with how we rotated the ball, especially in midfield, where we dominated.

In the second half, the other team came at us and had a few chances. They could have won the game, but I am happy to take this one point.” YAAF M
