Gweru City Council (GCC) in partnership with Zimbabwe Alloys launched a bold Breast Cancer Awareness campaign last Friday, aiming to educate and support individuals affected.

The theme for this initiative was “Wellness Beyond Generations, Courage in every step. Hope heals. Fight for those who can’t. Standing with those who brave the fight.”

The GCC and Zimbabwe Alloys team marched around the CBD inviting everyone to join in the cancer awareness campaign. Gweru Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko expressed gratitude to participants for their support and understanding towards cancer.

“We stand in solidarity with those who are fighting cancer and survivors of this deadly disease not forgetting those who support them. We remember those whom we have lost to cancer, we hold their memories, laughter and their contribution to the community but even amused the grief we find hope.”

Mayor Chivhoko praised survivors who shared their testimonies on how they dealt with this deadly disease.

“The testimonies of cancer survivors inspire us to continue with the fund. As a city, we are committed to improving the health care infrastructure enhancing access to cancer treatment promoting early detection.”

Bethel clinic nurses performed a drama showing symptoms of cancer such as sow breast, change in color and tiredness.

They showed challenges faced by women in the community because of a lack of knowledge about the disease.

The guest speaker Dr Urayai Kadumbo insightful presentation highlighted breast cancer symptoms, treatments, and the critical importance of early detection.

“Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumors. If you see that you have a problem with your breasts’ go to the nearest hospital or clinic. We are saying all women and men be breast self-aware. Know your breasts’ features. Examine yourself on your body mirrors at home.”

“Breast cancer is a treatable disease if detected early. It is crucial to know the signs and symptoms and seek medical attention promptly.”

Mayor Chivhoko encouraged the community to seek medical attention from health care centers as early detection of the disease saves life.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been celebrated in October since the eighties.
It is called pink October as people around the world adopt pink color and display a pink ribbon to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The month aims to promote screening and prevention of diseases, that affect 2.3 million women worldwide.
