Gweru United Transport Association launch: A new Era for Public Transport

In a significant development for public transportation in Gweru, The Gweru United Transport Association (GUTA) was officially launched on 17 September 2024.

The event took place at Gweru Central Traffic Police at 1000am,attended by various stakeholders including city councils members, police representatives ,officials from the ministry of transport and local transport operators.

This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of public transport services in the region.

Gweru Central Traffic Officer-In-Charge opened the proceedings with a speech emphasizing the importance of safety in public Transport.

He stated “As we welcome Gweru United Transport Association (GUTA) into our community, we are committed to ensuring that all operators adhere to safety regulations. Our goal is to create a secure environment for both drivers and passengers”.

He highlighted ongoing collaborations between law enforcement and transport operators to mitigate crime and ensure compliance with traffic laws Gweru United Transport Association Vision statement we will enhance road safety standards, address industry challenges, including infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.

Chairperson of (GUTA) J.C Sibanda noted that “our vision is to create safe efficient and reliable transportation system that benefits our members, passengers and the community at Large”.

“We will achieve this through improving road safety standards, enhancing service delivery, promoting sustainable transportation practices and advocating for policies beneficial to our members”.

“We acknowledge the challenges facing our industry from inadequate infrastructure to regulatory frameworks. However we also recognize the opportunities creating jobs, economic growth, improving air quality and enhancing Gweru’s competitiveness as a business hub.”

Following the chairperson seagant Malachi shumba from city council took to the podium who emphasized the importance of organized public transport in promoting order in the city, economic growth and improving accessibility for residents Seagant Malachi Shumba stated “Today marks a significant mile stone in our journey towards creating a more efficient and reliable public transport system. The establishment of GUTA will not only streamline operations but also ensure that our citizens have access to safe and affordable transportation”.

A representative from the Ministry Of Transport spoke about national policies supporting such initiatives.

Assistant Commissioner Tinago Getrude noted that “The government recognizes that effective public transport systems are vital for urban development. We are here to teach and support GUTA about the requirements of their vehicles”.

In an exclusive interview following the speeches of several operators from GUTA shared their perspectives on this new venture. Operator Tafadzwa Chipunza expressed optimism about joining forces under one umbrella.

GUTA Operator Tafadzwa Chipunza noted “As individuals operators we often faced challenges such as competition and lack of coordination with GUTA we can share resources and strategies to better serve our customers” Another operator added “This association gives us a voice in discussions about transport polices affecting our live hoods”.

The operators collectively agreed that they look forward to improved communication with local authorities and law enforcement through this association.

They believe it will lead to better service standards and increased passenger satisfaction
The launch of Gweru United Transport Association signifies a collaborative effort among various stakeholders aimed at improving public transportation in Gweru.

With strong support from city official’s law enforcement agencies and government ministries there is no hope of enhanced safety and efficiency in public transit systems moving forward.
