Danisa Ncube (37) was arrested at Gweru’s Kudzanayi Bus Terminus for unlawful possession of dagga following an intelligence-led operation.
According to a detailed statement from Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer for the Midlands Province, the police acted on a tip-off.
“Acting on the information received, a team of detectives proceeded to Kudzanayi Bus Terminus, where they kept the suspect under surveillance,” Inspector Mahoko reported.
The officers observed Ncube as he arrived at the terminal and allegedly made contact with another individual to take possession of the illegal goods.
At this moment, the police intervened and intercepted the suspect.
A thorough search of the packages in Ncube’s possession led to a significant discovery.
“During the search, the detectives recovered 16 shrink-wrapped cobs of prepared dagga,” Inspector Mahoko confirmed.
The drugs, already prepared for sale and consumption, were packaged in two separate parcels, indicating they were intended for distribution to various points of sale within the city.
Ncube was taken into custody and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
The investigation is ongoing, as law enforcement officials work to trace the source of the consignment and identify any other individuals possibly involved in the illicit drug supply chain.
Ncube is expected to appear before the Gweru Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday, February 26, 2026, where he will formally face charges.
In his statement, Inspector Mahoko reiterated the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s commitment to eradicating the issue of dangerous drugs within communities.
He issued a firm warning to the public about the legal consequences of engaging with narcotics.
“Let this arrest serve as a warning to those involved in such illicit activities. Dealing in or possessing dangerous drugs without a license is a serious criminal offense that carries substantial penalties upon conviction,” he said.
“It is our collective responsibility as a nation to protect our future from the devastating effects of drugs, which are destroying the lives of our young people and undermining the fabric of our society.”
This arrest is part of a series of operations by the ZRP targeting drug peddlers, especially in busy public areas like bus termini, which are commonly used as drop-off and collection points for illegal substances.
The police have observed a troubling increase in drug and substance abuse among the youth and have vowed to enhance patrols and intelligence gathering efforts.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has called upon members of the public to partner in this fight against drugs. Anyone with information that could assist in identifying and apprehending individuals suspected of dealing in dangerous drugs is urged to report to the nearest police station.
The arrest of Danisa Ncube highlights the escalating challenge of drug trafficking in Gweru, with Kudzanayi Bus Terminus emerging as a notorious hotspot for such illegal transactions due to its status as a major transport hub connecting Gweru to Harare, Bulawayo, and other provincial towns. Local community leaders have expressed concern over the increasing availability of narcotics in public spaces, with some residents attributing the rise in drug trade to unemployment and economic hardships driving young people towards these activities as a quick source of income.
