Gweru Doctor arrested for using drugs

A 49-year-old medical doctor and four other individuals were arraigned before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court on charges of possessing and using methamphetamine, commonly known as Mutoriro.

Farikai Manjeya (49), along with Tafara Chigoya (28), Kudakwashe Godknows Mutata (29), and Tariro Pambwa (35), appeared in court following their arrest on November 9 at the doctors’ cottages in Gweru.

Police detectives received a tip-off that led them to the scene where the accused were allegedly found smoking the dangerous drug using J-pipes and cigarette lighters.

Upon arrest, the police seized several items used for drug consumption, including J-pipes, a cigarette lighter and an empty sachet suspected to have contained the illegal substance.

The four were taken into custody and have since been remanded pending a bail hearing.

In response to the incident, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) called on communities to work closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspected drug abuse in their surroundings.

The authority emphasized that collective vigilance is critical in protecting young people and curbing the rising tide of drug-related crimes in Zimbabwe.
