Gonye dam brings life to Shurugwi community

Abiah Madzudzo

In a landscape where water represents security, Gonye Dam has become an essential source of water and livelihood for the Shurugwi community.

The dam is transforming local life by providing crucial irrigation for farmers, boosting fishing, and offering recreational opportunities.

Ultimately, it enhances community resilience and promotes sustainable development in the region over time. This long-standing infrastructure, a quiet backbone of the district for years, is once again proving its irreplaceable worth.

Locals confidently declare that their safety net for the upcoming dry season is firmly in place.

Speaking to this reporter, resident Mr. Ranganai Mandizvidza shared, “The blessings are in the water, as many people are benefiting from the dam, especially during the dry seasons. This dam was built a few years ago. We have benefited a lot. It is our peace of mind. We are not worried about the next drought. Our irrigation pipes will keep running, our gardens will grow, and our children will be fed.”

The dam is a crucial asset from a previous era, consistently supporting the local economy.

Its current abundance amplifies its core benefits, ensuring consistent irrigation for crops beyond the rainy season, providing a permanent drinking source for thousands of livestock, and holding potential for fish farming.

Another resident, Mrs. Faith Maronga, noted that Gonye Dam saves her family by providing water for their vegetables and cattle.

“We have known this water for a long time, but when I see it, I plan with a strong heart. I have already prepared extra seedlings because I know the water will be there to nourish them. This dam does not just water our fields; it waters our hopes.”

Local leaders echo this sentiment, emphasizing that the existing infrastructure is the first line of defense against climate variability. “Gonye Dam is our unsung hero. It was built with foresight.

Today, that foresight is shielding us.

The community’s praise is not just for the water level today, but for the food security, income, and livestock health it ensures for tomorrow.

We are also looking to revitalize community fisheries projects because the resource is so promising.”

The overwhelming feeling is one of preparedness. While other regions may anxiously watch the skies, the people of Shurugwi look toward their reliable dam with gratitude, their agricultural calendars and livelihoods bolstered by its stored bounty.

As the sun glints off its expansive surface, Gonye Dam stands not as a new project but as a timeless testament to the power of enduring water infrastructure.

It embodies a simple, profound truth for the community in a world of uncertainty: their collective future is a little more certain, one stored drop at a time.
