The City of Gweru is poised to enhance its mental health services through a partnership with the Queen of Peace Rehabilitation and Crisis Centre. During a recent tour of the center, led by its founder, Dr. Stella Khumalo Punungwe, councillors and city officials expressed their commitment to supporting the facility’s essential work.
Dr. Khumalo emphasized the Queen of Peace Centre’s crucial role in providing a safe environment for individuals with mental health challenges and offering rehabilitation programs for drug addicts.
“The Queen of Peace plays a critical role in Gweru. We help individuals with mental health issues by removing them from the city center and providing them with a safe space, while also running rehabilitation programs for those struggling with drug addiction,” she stated. “To sustain and improve these services, we need the support of local authorities.”
Mayor Chivhoko responded positively, underscoring that mental health is a priority for the council.
“The council will do its part to ensure this center receives the support it needs,” he said, encouraging local businesses to contribute to the center’s initiatives.
This collaboration highlights an increasing awareness of the necessity for unified efforts to tackle mental health challenges and substance abuse in the region.
The City Council’s commitment, combined with the efforts of the Queen of Peace Centre, is set to make a meaningful impact on the wellness of the community in Gweru.
