From pickaxe to plough: Zvishavane miner finds fortune in farming

51-year-old farmer has become a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs in Midlands Province after establishing a thriving agricultural enterprise in Zvishavane, providing clear evidence of the success of the government’s land reform programme.

ZBC News caught up with Samson Gondwe at his farm, where he is engaged in cattle breeding, pen fattening, poultry, goat rearing, and crop farming.

His achievements serve as an example to other miners in the province, demonstrating that agriculture can be a viable and lucrative business opportunity.

“After receiving land from the government, I started from scratch, drilling boreholes for the piggery and goat projects, and now we are here. We launched the poultry project two years ago, and it has been a success. In the fields, we are harvesting no less than eight tonnes per hectare of maize,” said Gondwe.

Gondwe credited his success to the ZANU PF government’s empowerment policies.

“I have to give credit to the ruling Zanu PF which initiated some programmes that support the empowerment of the blacks. I was pushed into agricultural activities by the ruling party’s motive. The ruling party inspired me,” he said.

Gondwe’s farming exploits have managed to create employment for the local community through its various projects, and it is contributing towards the provincial gross domestic product.
