From humble beginings

Buhle Mhlaulo

A young entrepreneur in Gweru by the name of Tadiwa Makiwa has shown his talent for making speakers without shells out of recycled material such as cardboard boxes.

Tadiwa is a 19-year-old boy who was fascinated by art, music and electronics, growing up. He is not only talented in art but also a rapper creating his music.

He noticed that people dump litter everywhere polluting the environment and that is what triggered his idea of him using the material to create speakers.

“I noted that waste multiply day by day causing a lot of pollution to the environment.
People must stop dumping their waste everywhere, instead, they must find a way of making their communities clean by recycling cardboard boxes” he said.

“As a rapper, l loved singing and listening to others, but l couldn’t afford speakers with the loud volume l desired. That’s when an idea sparked what if l created my speakers?

Through trial and error, I experimented with innovative designs, using recycled cardboard boxes as a starting point.

Each attempt brought new insights, and l refined my ideas” he added.

Tadiwa says he was in Form 3 in Mkoba 3 High, in 2022 when he made 30 speakers for those who appreciated his work and noted he was making money out of waste material.

He bought his phone with the money he got from the sales.

He dreams of having his own company called Kiwapower which will be producing speakers with volumes.

He wants to motivate young people to find something to do and not run after drugs.
