CPC Safeguards Consumer Rights

By Savious Madanhire

The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) continues to play a vital role in protecting consumers from unfair business practices, as part of its efforts to promote consumer awareness and education.

The CPC launches awareness campaigns aimed at empowering consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing goods and services.

Speaking during a campaign, Felistas Makombe, an analyst at the CPC, shed light on the consumer’s rights when purchasing goods.

The right to education and awareness, right to health and safety (using goods and products with safety precautions, right to information (for example displaying prices, warranty and information about any products consumers which to acquire), right to choose, right to be heard (a consumer has the right to return products if not satisfied).

Disclaimer clauses (NO RETURN, NO REFUND) are being rejected by the CPC to be written in shops or receipts, hence when one does that he/she is breaking the law.

Makombe outlined the CPC’s key functions, which include investigating complaints, enforcing consumer protection laws, educating consumers, and advocating for consumer rights.

“We take all complaints seriously and work to resolve them promptly.”

“Consumers are encouraged to be given receipts with the company or shop name wherever they purchase their goods, for evidence in the future.

If they refuse, consumers are allowed to contact the CPC and report the situation.

All electrical appliances should have a warranty in case they don’t work, hence the consumer can go back to the shop and get a new item or the purchased one fixed without charge,” Makombe said.

The CPC’s enforcement efforts are also crucial in promoting fair competition and protecting consumer rights. “We work to ensure that businesses comply with laws and regulations related to consumer protection.

By enforcing these laws and regulations, the CPC helps to create a level playing field for businesses and protects consumers from unfair practices,” Makombe explained.

Education and awareness are also critical components of the CPC’s efforts to promote consumer protection.

“We want to empower consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing goods and services. By educating consumers about their rights and responsibilities, the CPC helps to promote a culture of consumer awareness and responsibility,” she said.

Additionally, the CPC’s advocacy efforts are also focused on promoting consumer rights and interests.

“We work to ensure that consumer interests are represented and protected.

By engaging with stakeholders, including businesses, government agencies, and consumer organizations, the CPC helps to promote a fair and transparent market that benefits everyone.”
