The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has announced a recall of NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula (0–12 months), used for infants at risk of developing cow’s milk protein allergy.
The affected product is NAN Special Pro HA 800g with batch number 51660742F3, sold from September 2025 through major retailers and distributors across South Africa.
According to the CPC press statement, the recall followed the identification of a potential presence of Cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
“The recall follows the identification of a potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, posing a food safety risk. The product has an approximate shelf life of eighteen (18) months.”
The press statement went on to urge consumers who purchased the affected formula to stop using it and immediately return it to a purchasing point.
“Consumers who purchased the affected formula are advised to stop using it immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.”
The CPC, mandated by section 15 (1) (d & e), is obligated to notify consumers of health-risking goods and initiate a product recall program.
The National Consumer Commission spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said the product, if consumed by an infant it will cause vomiting within 6 hours.
“In terms of harmfulness of the product, Bacillus, this toxin is actually in the food or in the infant, the first thing that will happen the can vomit immediately, or they can vomit within a space of six hours.”
The CPC will engage with the National Consumer Commission of South Africa to ensure full compliance with food safety and consumer protection requirements.
