Construction works for Kwekwe GMB silos progressing well

Albert Andiseni-Mashigaidze

The construction of the new Grain Marketing Board (GMB) silos in Kwekwe is making significant strides, promising to enhance Zimbabwe’s grain storage capacity.

With a vision to expand from 750,000 tonnes to over one million tonnes, this project is a crucial step towards ensuring food security in the nation.

The government has initiated the construction of four 56,400-tonne silo complexes at key locations, including Kwekwe, as part of a broader strategy to modernize grain storage facilities across the country.

The total budget for this phase of construction is estimated at $112 million, with a projected completion timeline of three years.

John Basera, the Permanent Secretary of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, stated, “As we march toward Vision 2030 agriculturally, with one bumper harvest after the other, silo storage expansion is a requirement. This project is not just about storage but securing our future food supply.”

Edwin Zimunga, Chief Director for Agricultural Engineering, Mechanization and Soil Conservation, emphasized the importance of collaboration and said, “We are working closely with Aftrade of Belarus and the Bühler/African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Project Concept to ensure that our facilities meet international standards.

This partnership is vital for the success of our grain storage expansion.

“The expansion of the GMB silos is expected to create numerous job opportunities in the construction phase and beyond, contributing to the local economy. With the anticipated increase in grain production, the GMB aims to enhance its capacity to store maize and traditional grains, which are expected to see a significant harvest this season.

Local farmers have expressed optimism about the project.

A farmer from Kwekwe remarked,
“This is a game-changer for us. With better storage facilities, we can ensure that our harvests are preserved and sell our produce at better prices.

The construction of the Kwekwe GMB silos is a pivotal development in Zimbabwe’s agricultural landscape.

As the project progresses, it stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing food security and supporting local farmers.

With the voices of GMB representatives echoing the importance of this initiative, the future looks promising for grain storage in Zimbabwe.
