In a shocking scene that left Gokwe residents shell shocked, a 46-year old man was killed by a mentally challenged man who had fled a spiritual cleansing ceremony at Zion Christian Church (ZCC).
Brighton Mufudza (19) of Tsinhai village under Chief Jiri in Gokwe was escorted to Gwetsanga ZCC to seek spiritual help by relatives since he was being suspected of suffering from mental health challenges.
It is alleged that Brighton fled from the church and his relatives went after him.
Mufudza then met up with Godfrey Torongo (46) of Tosiyana village under Chief Jiri in Gokwe and they started walking together.
Mufudza’s relatives asked Torongo to apprehend Mufudza who became violent and attacked Torongo with a stone on the forehead.
Torongo then fell on the ground and died on the spot.
The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene.
Torongo’s body was taken to Gokwe District Hospital awaiting post mortem while Mufudza was arrested and is assisting the police with investigations.
Acting Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer for Midlands province Ethel Mukwende encouraged people with mentally challenged relatives to ensure that they are always on medication and that they take their medication on time to avoid such incidents.
