As reports of flooding continue in several parts of the country due to persistent rains, the City of Gweru has assured residents that it is fully prepared to handle any necessary evacuations should flooding affect the area.
The local authority reports that comprehensive measures are already in place to protect lives, particularly for communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas. These measures include the identification of evacuation centers and the mobilization of emergency response teams to act swiftly in the event of a disaster.
As part of its flood preparedness strategy, the City of Gweru has designated several community facilities to provide temporary shelter and basic support for displaced residents. The evacuation centers include Ingwe Hall in Senga, Shumba Hall in Mambo, Mkoba 2 Hall, Mkoba 10 Clubhouse, Mtapa Hall, the Church of the Nazarene in Woodlands, and Muwunga Primary School. These centers were selected to ensure accessibility and broad coverage across the city’s residential areas.
Vimbai Chingwaramuswee, the City of Gweru’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that trained personnel are on standby to respond to emergencies as the rainy season intensifies.
“In the event of flooding, we have established evacuation centers and mobilized a team of personnel ready to assist. Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” said Chingwaramuswee.
City Mayor Cllr. Martin Chivhoko added that the local authority is working closely with the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), which operates under the leadership of the District Development Coordinator (DDC), to guarantee a coordinated and effective response to any disaster.
“The City of Gweru actively participates within the Civil Protection Unit framework. This collaboration enables timely decision-making, efficient coordination, and rapid deployment of resources whenever emergencies arise,” she stated.
Residents, especially those living in areas that have previously experienced flooding, are urged to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season. The local authority has called on the public to follow updates and warnings from emergency services, avoid crossing flooded rivers or streams, and relocate to designated evacuation centers when advised.
In case of emergencies, residents can contact ambulance services at 2222011 or 2/993/994. Fire and rescue services are also available through these same contact numbers.
The City of Gweru has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, appealing to residents to cooperate with authorities as part of collective efforts to minimize the impact of potential flooding.
