Choppies evicted

By Staff Reporter

One of Gweru’s popular retail supermarket, Choppies was this morning evicted from its premises by the owners who reportedly want to turn it into a shopping mall.

Shoppers were this morning shocked to see groceries and equipment being thrown outside the premises by the deputy sheriff on orders of the building’s owners.

According to workers at the supermarket said they were forced to vacate after the new owners of the building canceled the lease agreement which was supposed to end in 2025.

“We were told that the new owners want to turn the premises into another shopping mall as it brings in more money than having one tenant. We don’t know what will happen to us since the shop is closed,” said an employee.

“The owner of the premise who is an Indian origin, sometime this year closed the supermarket due to non-payment of workers and low salaries. Rentals are said to have been increased by more than 400 percent which is not sustainable, “said another employee.

An effort to get comment from management was not successful by the time of going to press. More to follow. #The Sun
