A total of 371 Cholera cases and 23 deaths have been recorded in the Midlands province with Mberengwa leading with most cases reported, it has been established.
According to figures prepared by the Provincial Rapid Response Team (RRT), cumulative cholera cases for the Midlands since February 2023 to date are 371 and 23 deaths with an overall case fatality rate of 6.2 percent.
There are currently 13 cases in care with Mberengwa (7), Gokwe North (0), Kwekwe (1), Gweru (1), and Zvishavane (4), with a recovery rate of 91percent, as of 18 January 2024.
RRT said there is a general increase in cases across the province with Mberengwa being the most affected.
Cumulative suspected cases per district are as follows, Chirumhanzu (37), Gokwe North (28), Gokwe South (5), Gweru (9), Kwekwe (3), Mberengwa (174), Shurugwi (0), Zvishavane (115). Meanwhile, a suspected case of cholera was reported on Friday in the suburb of Woodlands Park in Gweru, when a man suffering from severe diarrhea attempted to commit suicide by drowning himself in a homemade well.
The man was complaining that he was experiencing extreme pain from the diarrhea and decided to commit suicide. The man is currently admitted at the Gweru Provincial Hospital receiving treatment.
The current cholera epidemic broke out in February 2023, and has since affected all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. Until 20 November 2023, there had been nearly 10,000 cases and 206 people had lost their lives. There is thus a high case fatality rate of 2.6%. #TheSun
